Krawcheck presented her newest book, Own It: The Power of Women at Work, and shared stories from her career and strategies for advancing women in business at The Academy of Natural Sciences on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

The event was presented by QVC, and was part of the ABC’s Global Thought Leader Series, which curates and convenes world-class experts in, among other things, leadership development, design thinking, and technology and innovation.

“Sallie Krawcheck being here in Philadelphia is exciting and relevant because women are unique assets to any organization looking to disrupt ‘business as usual,’” said Karin Copeland, Executive Director of the Arts + Business Council. “Our perspectives as employees, entrepreneurs, and leaders empower us to stay close to our customers and community members, and build products, services, and experiences that speak to real needs in the marketplace.”

Having been the lone woman at the highest rungs of Wall Street — including posts as CEO of Smith Barney, CEO of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, and CFO of Citigroup — Krawcheck knows what it takes to succeed as a woman in a man’s world.

Rather than “lean in” further, play the game better, or demand a seat at the table — in other words, act more like men — Krawcheck put forward a different plan. She encouraged women to leverage the unique traits that make them stronger leaders, better team players, and more valuable assets to employers.

Krawcheck advised women to take advantage of their broader perspective, attitude toward risk, creativity, long-term focus, empathy, and more. Women who capitalize on these traits won’t need to demand a place at the table. It will be offered to them, not out of political correctness, but out of good business sense.

“Sallie Krawcheck is an extraordinary leader and is an inspiration to every woman who wants to expand her influence and make a difference,” said Colleen Rooney, Vice President of Global Communications and Community Affairs at QVC. “We at QVC are passionate about promoting the success and wellness of women through the power of relationships.

“We’re proud to have teamed up with the Arts + Business Council to help Sallie share her vision with our region’s arts and business community.”
