File created with CoreGraphicsSeveral homeless veterans will be warmer this winter thanks to numerous volunteers who, as part of David’s Drive 831, purchased leftover inventory from the recently-shuttered Coatesville Army & Navy store and donated it to the nearby Veterans Administration, writes Brian McCullough for the Daily Local News.

This is the largest one-time effort by the nonprofit so far. Thousands of clothing items were hauled off in two trucks toward the Coatesville V.A., with thousands more purchased to be distributed to needy children through other local organizations.

David Turner Sr. started the nonprofit in memory of his son, David Turner Jr., who worked at the Coatesville V.A. canteen. There, Turner Jr. was once deeply saddened by a homeless man who could not afford underwear.

Turner Jr. later died suddenly of a suspected heart arrhythmia in December 2009. For what would’ve been his 21st birthday, his parents threw a party asking all the attendees to bring underwear for donations, and it resulted in 4,000 items.

“He would have been so proud to have helped so many vets,” Turner Sr. said of his son. “It serves many veterans in other parts of Chester, Montgomery, and Delaware counties as well.”
