naruc_logo-blue_goldRobert Powelson, the former head of the Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry, has taken up a one-year term as president of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, writes Andrew Maykuth for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Powelson first became involved in utility oversight in 2008, when he was appointed to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission by then-Gov. Ed Rendell. The move to NARUC, the Washington advocacy group for state utility commissioners, will be especially challenging with a new administration about to move into the White House.

“It’s going to be a very big year for us as an organization, and I’m really gearing up,” said Powelson. “For me personally, it’s a real hallmark in my career to have this opportunity.”

The Trump Administration has already signaled that it is planning to review a wide range of energy policies, including President Obama’s Clean Power Plan. This will make Powelson’s role even more critical as states have been divided on the benefits of the Clean Power Plan.

“We try to reach consensus on issues,” said Powelson. “We staunchly focus on states’ rights and respecting the regulatory compact.”
