McGovern, Inc. continues to expand and has moved from its Kennett Square headquarters and satellite locations to a centralized facility in West Chester.

Meanwhile, founder and family matriarch Helen McGovern, 91, shows no sign of slowing down, according to a staff report from Southern Chester County Weeklies.

McGovern has been in the septic business for nearly six decades. She started working for a Kennett Square septic company after her husband William P. McGovern unexpectedly passed away when she was just 32.

She soon earned a managerial role through her knowledge and dedication. Nevertheless, she was dismissed when the company changed ownership, prompting her to get her own pump truck and start McGovern with her son Bill in 1974.

While both the company and her family grew and prospered, McGovern said “it was far from a fairy tale.”

She lost her oldest daughter at the young age of 33, and two grandchildren, both aged 34. To get through the hard times, McGovern gave her family one key piece of advice.

“Always look forward, and try for tomorrow.”
