It’s not uncommon for readers to form a bond with their favorite author, but Malvern is home to a bestselling writer who cherishes the opportunity to bond with her readers.

Every year. For two days. With hugs.

Lisa Scottoline’s 11-year tradition of hosting an invitational bash for book club members attracted 1,200 fans to her 44-acre farm this month, according to her column in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“If you ask me the reason that I not only read books but write them, it’s to connect with people,” writes Scottoline, who grew up in Bala Cynwyd and graduated from Lower Merion High School in 1973. “That’s the highest and best purpose of the arts, and I believe there is nurturance, happiness, and love in that human connection.

“Book clubs are a way for people to connect to one another through a book, forming a soul-to-soul bond that can become a friendship lasting 10, 20, and even 30 years. I’ve seen it happen, and if you’re in a book club and you agree with me, let me hear from you.”

Lots of people already have. Scottoline’s annual appreciation event started with 100 guests, and both her attendance and her renown have grown tremendously since — thanks in large part to book clubs.

“She gives back to her fans. Who lets people into their homes like this?” Frances Parente said in a Time magazine feature about the party.

No stranger to mystery, the former lawyer who holds her bachelor’s and law degrees from Penn writes both thrillers filled with intrigue and comedy, including the Inquirer’s weekly Chick Wit column.

“I’m the Jekyll and Hyde of authors,” she writes. “Dark Lisa writes thrillers, and Light Lisa writes jokes. So, whatever your mood, read me.”

And Scottoline draws inspiration from all kinds of places, especially her book club party.

“I know strong women characters,” she said in the Time piece. “I’m looking at them!”
