Philadelphians Proud and Positive About City’s Future

By

In the eyes of its residents, Philadelphia’s trajectory is the best it’s been in the seven years that The Pew Charitable Trusts have polled the people.

Half of everyone who responded to an August survey thought the city is headed in the right direction, while 34 percent thought it’s not. The trend is a strong reversal from the mere 37 percent who supported the direction Philadelphia was headed just three years ago.

Among the highlights since then, Philadelphia has hosted a special visit from Pope Francis and the gathering of political activists for the Democratic National Convention, which combined made 72 percent of people feel proud of living here.

The biggest concern coming out of the poll may actually be a positive for Chester County. While the fewest number of young adults since Pew began asking in 2013 said they plan to stay in Philadelphia for the next 10 years, 10 percent of the 52 percent who said they might leave indicated they’re more inclined to a suburban lifestyle.

Other big reasons to leave were for jobs and careers (23 percent), education and child rearing (21 percent) and public safety (18 percent).
