Coatesville’s inaugural Grand Prix on Saturday brought more than just antique cars to the heart of the city; it brought excitement, droves of spectators and reignited camaraderie.

“It brought the community together to celebrate and enjoy a great American pastime: racing cars,” area resident Randy Waltermyer said in a report for The Times of Chester County by Lauren Parker-Gill. “It was a phenomenal event for everyone from car enthusiasts to families just looking for a good time.”

A lineup of vintage race cars and motorcycles, including a pre-1940 open wheel racer division, spanned two blocks before taking on the 2.2-mile Lincoln Highway grand prix course at speeds of up to 90 mph, the article stated.

“The turnout of cars was fantastic,” driver Howard Wellens said in the article. “It was a lot of fun.”

Even former Philadelphia Eagles Coach and East Fallowfield resident Dick Vermeil raced his dad’s 1937 Miller sprint car in the grand prix.
