Destination ChesCo: Black Walnut Winery in Sadsburyville
By Rachel Stevenson
If you’ve read my other Destination ChesCo articles, you might wonder why this is my second winery article this month. No, I’m not a food and wine blogger, nor am I a lush.
Rather, I am a business owner, writer, networker, photographer, and non-profit leader. Needless to say, my roles take me to dozens of restaurants, events, and venues around the county.
Most of the places I visit are similar – typical bar, average food, and friendly waitstaff. Business cards are exchanged, money is raised, and at the end of the night I am ready to leave. I rarely remember what the decor looked like, let alone the flavors of the dish, or the name of my server.
But when an event creates an experience that I want to hold onto – one that evokes joy, relaxation, and a feeling of community, not to mention an incredible afternoon breeze – it’s worth sharing with my favorite VISTA.Today friends!
This weekend I hosted a non-profit concert at Black Walnut Winery in Sadsburyville, PA (Coatesville to most).
While Christina Havrilla & Gretchen Schultz of Gypsy Fuzz entertained us, attendees sipped wine, nibbled on cheese and crackers, mingled with friends, and played corn hole on the lawn.
The venue, with access from Business Route 30, provides the perfect venue for outdoor concerts, weddings, baby showers, or afternoon dates.
While the idea of the winery started in 2001, the property wasn’t purchased until a few years later.
“In April of 2006 we began the process of renovating a 198 year old bank barn in Chester County, PA to house Black Walnut Winery,” their website mentions.
“The renovations were completed a little more than three years later, and we opened the winery to the public on July 31, 2009. We decided to open a second location in the Spring of 2010, and our Phoenixville Tasting Room opened to the public on September 10, 2010.”
The winery hosts several events throughout the year, including Sunday Fundays, the Annual Fire and Wine Festival (currently in its 4th year), Painting Under the Influence.
The next concert is the Deb Callahan Trio, although they’ve hosted several regional musicians this year.
In the winter months, the Sadsburyville and Phoenixville locations offer indoor activities and wine tastings. I’ve already marked my calendar for the Tipsy Artist Wine Bottle Crafting event.
Owners Valerie and Lance, take pride in their winery. While you won’t find a vineyard at their locations, the wines elecit strong fresh flavors from grapes harvested locally. And their newest wine – the white cabernet – is absolutely di-vine!
Next time you are looking for a local weekend experience, head over to the Black Walnut Winery.
