A record field of amateur and professional male and female cyclists pounded the pavement of historic downtown West Chester and thrilled the community during this year’s edition of the Iron Hill Twilight Race Series on Saturday.

Racing elbow to elbow at speeds up to 35 mph around eight city blocks, the cyclists dueled for not only their respective race title but the 2016 TUFMED USA CRITS Championship Series finale.

“One of West Chester’s biggest community events was an enormous success,” said Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce President Mark Yoder. “Sincere thanks goes to our volunteers, without whom this event couldn’t happen. Special appreciation goes to the sponsors, partner organizations and businesses, the variety of services and departments of the borough of West Chester and the local law enforcement.”

GWCCC also brought in Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jordan Hicks to pump up the crowd, in addition to day-long festivities and competitions for all ages. Local 3- through 10-year-olds tried their best to get the event in gear during the West Chester Dental Arts Kids Race, and then adults reverted back to childhood for the entertaining Tolsdorf Twilight Trike Challenge. The five-member relay team from Kelly’s Sports came ready to play and beat all challengers to the finish line for the 2016 trophy.

The main events, of course, were the Rothman Institute Amateur Men’s Criterium, the Brumbaugh Wealth Management Pro Women’s Criterium and the Iron Hill Pro Men’s Criterium. Women and men cyclists raced for equal prize money for the first time in the history of the Iron Hill Twilight event, all thanks to new sponsor, Brumbaugh Wealth Management Group. Pro women and men cyclists from around the country and beyond battled for a cut of the $23,000 total prize purse.

“The Iron Hill Twilight Race Series – It’s not just a bike race … it’s a day of family fun,” GWCCC concluded. “See you next year!”
