In case you haven’t seen the message, in an unprecedented move, Microsoft is offering customers running Windows 7 and Windows 8 a free upgrade to Windows 10. However, the free upgrade must be claimed by July 29, 2016.

Windows 10 offers several improvements, including better interoperability with touch screen, mouse, and keyboard interfaces, and BitLocker drive encryption in the Pro edition.

BitLocker is especially worthwhile if you store any sensitive information on your local computer and want another level of protection for your data from a person who finds your laptop after a theft or a distracting taxi ride.

Most programs compatible with Windows 7 are compatible with Windows 10, but be sure to check with any software vendors you use before performing the upgrade. Software may require updates or a paid upgrade to a new version. Antivirus software, in particular, deserves some double-checking.

After you’re running Windows 10, Microsoft is releasing another free update on August 2 called the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

It will include enhancements like Windows Ink for a better stylus experience on touchscreens, better battery life when using the new Edge web browser, Xbox Play Anywhere, and apps designed to help schools, among other things.

If you choose to stick with Windows 7, Microsoft and most other software manufacturers will continue to support Windows 7 until January 14, 2020, so it won’t be the end of the world if you miss the July 29 deadline.

If you’re running a touchscreen, have sensitive data on your hard drive, or plan to keep your computer in service beyond January 2020, this Windows 10 offer is worth a closer look.
