Residents of Tredyffrin and participants from as far away as Georgia came together  last Sunday, to literally take steps to help cure sarcoma during the second annual Steps to Cure Sarcoma 5k Run, writes Adam Farence for Daily Local News.

The event at Wilson Farm Park was a resounding success, as the number of people nearly quintupled from last year, growing from 200 to 850. The run gave participants the chance to bond with survivors and offer support to people still fighting the disease. Some even brought their dogs, several of which had also suffered from sarcoma and survived.

Wayne’s Barbara Herzlich, who co-founded Steps to Cure Sarcoma with Lisa Dychala, said that the event raised a total of $75,000. That money will go to the University of Pennsylvania’s Abramson Cancer Center.

“It was a crazy community experience,” enthused Barbara. “These people are positive and active.”

Sarcoma is a type of cancer that can develop in the skin, bone and muscle and both Barbara and her son are sarcone survivors . Barbara’s son, Mark Herzlich, is now a New York Giants linebacker and served as Master of Ceremonies for the event.

“If you’ve lived one day with cancer, you’re a survivor,” he said.

Barbara noted that survivors, family members, friends and people currently fighting sarcoma all benefit from the feeling of camaraderie for what can be a troubling personal struggle.

“It’s very lonely when you’re battling cancer,” she said. “The only bump was that we had so many people, and that was a good thing.”
