King of Prussia based eBay Enterprise, the retail-logistics company formerly known as GSI Commerce, has transformed into an independent firm under the new name, Radial, writes Joseph N. DiStefano for Philly.com.

Before unveiling the new name at the company’s headquarters on Tuesday, Radial’s Chief Executive, Tobias Hartmann, pointed out that the company has grown to $1 billion in annual sales and 7,500 workers by moving on from just taking customer orders and shipping products from its warehouses in Northern America and Europe. Now, the firm sells everything, from advice to factory-to-truck ordering, tracking, scheduling, and payment services for retailers such as GameStop and DestinationXL.

“We were the smallest business unit in a big public company,” said Hartmann. “Now, commerce, technology, and commerce operations is the only thing we do.”

Hartmann joined the company five years ago, around the time the founder, Michael Rubin, sold the publicly traded GSI to eBay for $2.4 billion. He then replaced Craig Hayman as head of the company in the fall of last year after Hayman left to run Boston based PTC Partners, the firm that recently acquired both ThingWorx of Exton and ColdLight Solutions of Wayne for over $100 million each.

eBay had originally hoped to used GSI’s services to offer clients such as Toys R Us and Dick’s Sporting Goods online services that were competitive and would be able to rival Amazon’s. However, as some corporate clients developed their own online operations instead of using eBay Enterprise, eBay decided to sell the group for the bargain price of $925 million.

Sterling Partners together with Longview Asset Management bought the company and have now combined eBay Enterprise with its rival Innotrac to form the new company, Radial.
