Residents of Chester County who gave their time to the cause of freedom are themselves receiving the gift of independence this holiday season courtesy of a TMACC Holiday gift drive. Community members tripled their support for the Coatesville VA Medical Center and the Veterans Multi-Service Center with 700 practical gifts that will help veterans transition to permanent housing.

“On a day like today, we remember what their sacrifice has been on our behalf. I’m honored to be a part of this,” U.S. Sen. Bob Casey said.

The VMC, in particular, strives to end homelessness among veterans through a rapid re-housing project.

“Some of them come to us with nothing,” VMC Deputy Executive Director Maura “Mo” Gillen said. “Gifts like the ones we’re receiving today go a long way to make an empty apartment into a new home.”

The coordinated efforts of the Transportation Management Association of Chester County, the Ascot Summerfield Homeowner’s Association, Chester County Commissioners Kathi Cozzone and Terence Farrell, and Sen. Casey yielded far more than last year’s donation of 200 gifts.

“We had faith we were going to reach our goal of 500 gifts, but we didn’t know we would exceed it by so much, so quickly,” TMACC Executive Director Tim Phelps said. “We really appreciate the enthusiasm our members bring to causes like these.”

And the generosity was greatly appreciated; VA residents Ed Scheib and Mike Owens accepted the gifts Tuesday on behalf of their peers.

“I feel like when I do get out, I’ll have a good start and can complete my life,” Owens said. “With the help of the VA and everything that was donated, I feel like I have a fighting chance.”
