The Colonial Theatre has been running a selection of classic movies year-round, and their January selection will bring some true gems of classical filmmaking to the movie goers of Phoenixville.

With a less-known Hitchcock, early Kirk Douglas work that follows the famous actors 99th birthday, and several Robert Wise offerings, even the pickiest aficionados of good movies will find something to enjoy.

On January 3rd, Alfred Hitchcock’s first collaboration with James Stewart and his first color film ‘Rope’ will be presented. The murder tale made in 1948, is famous for long shots, giving the appearance that the entire movie was made in just one long continuous filming session, with the skyline of New York gradually turning to dusk as the tension mounts.

09A-Ace-in-the-HoleHitchcock’s work will be followed on January 10th by the Billy Wilder film, ‘Ace in the Hole’. One of Spike Lee’s favorite films, it sees a desperate journalist played by Kirk Douglas cynically exploit the “human interest” story of a mining accident. Known as one of the toughest films of its time, it still resonates well with today’s audience.

On January 17th, the movie theatre will show the first of two Robert Wise movies, ‘The House on Telegraph Hill’. This is the story of a WWII refugee who has taken the identity of a dead American who must contend with the scheming trustee of her estate. It has a storyline that is filled with clever twists and turns.

January 24th offers another excellent film noir from Robert Wise, ‘Odds Against Tomorrow’, a crime story that stars Robert Ryan as a bigoted ex-con and Harry Belafonte as a decent but desperate fellow-member of the robbery team. The film will grab you from the start and will not let go until the final shattering moments.

Finally, January 31st, will bring Sean Connery as a Moroccan sheik who kidnaps an American woman, played by Candice Bergen, and her children, setting off an international incident in the early years of the twentieth century. ‘The Wind and the Lion’ features an Oscar-nominated Jerry Goldsmith score.

All movies are shown at 2 p.m., with tickets costing $9 for adults, $7 for seniors aged 62 and over and students, and $5 for members and children.
