Mr. Candidate, Take Down Those Signs!

By

Memo to Chester County politicians, both those who celebrated victory Tuesday night and those who didn’t; those who had loads of their own money in the race and those who ran on a shoe-string budget; those who won by a landslide or those who lost by a handful of votes.

We appreciate your willingness to jump in and vie for an opportunity to serve your neighbors and community.  Without Americans like you who willingly sacrifice your privacy and open yourself up to (mostly) unwarranted scorn and ridicule, our still fledgling democracy would come to a grinding halt.

Now, please pick up after your campaign!

I have no idea who Sean Moir or Trip Lukens are, what party they belonged to, why they were running or even if they won on Tuesday.  I don’t know why they thought a garish yellow background more effectively communicated their candidacy than the standard red or blue lettering on a white background.

What I do know that as of 4:00 PM Wednesday afternoon, their campaign signs still graced (a term I use loosely) the corner of Darby Road and Route 252.

Messrs Moir and Lukens, please pick up after your campaign.

And to be fair, Moir and Lukens are not the only culprits.  Every campaign trying to win planted signs on Chester County’s yards, corners, ramps, islands and the meridian strips.  Its what candidates and campaigns do to win.

Now that the election is over, please do us all a favor and pick up after your campaigns.

And, if we get to this weekend and one of us non-candidates comes across a sign that hasn’t been taken down, resist the urge to write a letter to the editor or call the Daily Local and record an obnoxious rant.  Complaining is a waste of time and does nothing to remove the offending sign.

Instead, consider finding a safe place to pull over, yank the forlorn sign out of the ground and toss it, frame and all, in the trash when you get home.  You’ll be happier, candidates will appreciate your extra effort on their behalf and we’ll all enjoy a cleaner, less cluttered county.
