In Fall from Top, STEM Academy Gives Up Coveted Achievement Title
The county’s two-time top performer among Pennsylvania schools failed to deliver the knockout punch this past spring, but Downingtown STEM Academy still managed to come away with a top five ranking.
The high school finished just ahead of West Chester Bayard Rustin, which claimed sixth place, on this year’s School Performance Profile measurement of student achievement and progress, according to a report on Philly.com. The rankings are based on each school’s Keystone tests, achievement gaps, graduation rates, attendance and Advanced Placement offerings.
Downingtown wasn’t the only school to falter, either. A shakeup prompted by new changes in the state’s curriculum sent scores for 60 percent of schools slipping.
“Certainly we anticipated that there was going to be a change in the scores, and not necessarily for the better, given the new standards that are being applied at the last moment,” Pottstown School District Spokesman John Armato said in the article; Pottstown saw the biggest drop in the region for active schools.
Topping this year’s list was Wissahickon High School, followed by Strath Haven, Lower Moreland and Haverford.
