Covered Bridge: The Best Tweets From Today’s #AppleEvent

By

Reporters, bloggers, techies and investors gathered inside the Bill Graham Auditorium in San Francisco today for another Apple Event where the world’s most valuable company announced a couple new products (the iPencil and a keyboard for an optimized iPad Pro) and ambitious plans for some older ones. Most notably, Apple unveiled expanded capability for its Apple TV box declaring “the future of TV is apps”.

Such a future will include a partnership with the MLB Network (important because live sports are a big reason why anyone still bothers to have cable), Siri voice navigation, and a very Apple-y remote. Mainstay apps like Netflix and HBOGo will be available as well as games on the device. Analysts are calling it a bold gamble for Apple, as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have all tried and failed to create a popular smart tv solution for consumers.

Apple let the drama build for almost an hour and a half before even mentioning the iPhone, which the company has sold over half a billion of. Shortly after 2:30 EST Tim Cook unveiled the latest iterations of the flagship smartphone: the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Both feature faster processors, colorful aluminum casings, and 12 megapixel cameras in addition to other improvements over the iPhone 6. They’re also equipped with what Apple is calling ‘3D Touch” technology which makes the screens sensitive to the amount of pressure applied by fingertips–an exciting announcement for app developers especially.

Apple also announced an early upgrade program that will allow enrollees to get a new iPhone every year for $32 a month.
