Another prominent name is being stacked on the 205-year-old pile of important American projects forged at the hands of dedicated Coatesville steel workers. ArcelorMittal is providing the foundation for one of the nation’s most significant new bridges — New York City’s replacement of the landmark 3-mile-long Gov. Malcolm Wilson Tappan Zee Bridge across the Hudson River.

“Steel plates have been specifically designed to withstand the traffic the Tappan Zee will encounter over its estimated 100-year lifespan,” General Manager of Eastern Plate Operations Ed Frey said in a Chesco Times Report.

The job is one of the largest ever awarded in New York and throughout the United States, though ArcelorMittal steel also holds up several other high-profile landmarks.

“Our steel also stands tall and proud in One World Trade Center,” Frey said in the article. “The skyscraper contains 11,000 tons of plate from our Coatesville plant.”

New York also brought in Coatesville steel for its double-deck suspension Verrazano–Narrows Bridge at the mouth of the Hudson River, and sunlight glistens off local steel on St. Louis’ famous Gateway Arch.

A number of Navy ships were built with AM steel as well, including the USS Saratoga, Forrestal, Nautilus, Enterprise, New York, Arlington and Somerset.

And more than 30 percent of current-day ArcelorMittal steel comes from recycled metal.

“Steel is the most recycled material in the world, more than aluminum, paper, gas and plastic combined,” Frey said. “It is 100 percent recyclable, easily sorted (given its magnetism) and can be infinitely recycled without loss of quality.”
