Chester County Claims 5 Of America’s Top High Schools
Chester County received high grades for its high schools again this year because more students graduated at the top of the class. Five local high schools were among the 500 ranked by Newsweek as America’s Top High Schools 2015 — including one that outscored all other schools in Pennsylvania.
Taking top honors in preparing students for college was Berwyn’s Conestoga High School, which just missed the cutoff for the nation’s Top 50 at No. 51. Newsweek scored high schools according to its College Readiness Index, graduation rates and senior class college enrollment rates. Conestoga boasted an 87.0 percent College Readiness Index, 99.8 percent grad rate and 94.2 percent college-bound rate.
After several other state high schools, these Chester County schools ranked as follows:
- No. 342 Owen J. Roberts High School in Pottstown: 78.3 percent college-ready, 98.9 percent graduated and 97.8 percent college-bound
- No. 420 West Chester East High School: 77.2 percent college-ready, 99.3 percent graduated and 88.7 percent college-bound
- No. 455 West Chester Bayard Rustin High School: 76.8 percent college-ready, 98.5 percent graduated and 90.8 percent college-bound
- No. 462 Downingtown High School East Campus: 76.6 percent college-ready, 99.3 percent graduated and 97.8 percent college-bound
In addition, Newsweek found that Owen J. Roberts also excelled at “helping low-income students score at or above average on state assessments.”
