The revitalization of the borough of Oxford continues to be a work in progress but a recent meeting has helped to provide some clarity on the long-term goals. Daily Local News reported last week on what the Revitalization Task Force has been working on and the next steps to move the plans forward.

At the meeting held on Thursday May 18th, the Oxford Revitalization Task Force outlined three new goals and the specific steps needed to implement them. The goals are spread across three separate areas: Economic development, public infrastructure and transportation and housing and public service.

Oxford BoroughEconomic development in the Borough will focus on attracting and retaining businesses, marketing Oxford while capitalizing on its location and assisting with Oxford Mainstreet Inc.’s ultimate vision. Action items will include developing a marketing initiative and implementing downtown enhancements.

The Task Force seeks to maintain and enhance circulation and infrastructure by improving parking, improving service to public transportation and developing a traffic study.

Thu ultimate goal for housing and public services is to continue diversity while maintaining quality of life standards. Specific steps include strengthening code enforcement and property inspections and performing a fair share analysis, which will help to demonstrate the amount of existing affordable housing.

The information and goals presented will be used in conjunction with input from the community to draft the new plan.  Donna Hossler, Executive Director of Oxford Mainstreet Inc., stated, according to the Daily Local,  “It’s an important piece of the puzzle, so we know how to go forward from here. There’s so many good things happening. Little by little we’re getting new businesses in. It’s a slow process but it’s happening.”

The new plan should be presented to the public in September and could be adopted by the council as early as November. Comment opportunities will be available on the Borough Website.
