Covered Bridge: Weekend Reading

By

We hope as you enjoy your weekend you’ll also find some time to kick back and survey some of the best writing from around the web. This week we’re bringing you stories on some excellent documentaries you may want to watch over the weekend. Check it out.

  • The Man Who Became Big Bird“, by Jessic Gross, from Long Reads.
    • “Caroll Spinney has performed Big Bird and Oscar on Sesame Street since the show launched in 1969, almost half a century ago. A new documentary, I Am Big Bird, follows Spinney’s journey from a somewhat difficult childhood—his father had abusive tendencies, and he was picked on in school—to becoming a childhood icon.” Gross sits down with the iconic puppeteer to talk about his life, his, work and his reaction to the new documentary.
  • Kurt Cobain’s Beautiful Heck“, by Sarah Larson, from The New Yorker.
    • The latest entry into the Roc-Doc genre debuted on HBO this week. But “Montage of Heck” isn’t the typical Rock and Roll story. Director Brett Morgen worked closely with Kurt Cobain’s daughter for almost a decade to create a documentary that demythologizes the iconic Nirvana front-man. Did he succeed?
  • A Movie’s Killers Are All Too Real“, by Larry Rohter, from The New York Times.
    • “Lastly, we’d like to draw your attention to a documentary from a few years back. Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The Act of Killing” is about Indonesian war criminals who are more than happy to participate in recreating the mass murders they committed for the camera. If that sounds far-fetched, believe us, it is only the beginning of a truly surreal film.

As always, please feel free to comment with responses to the Covered Bridge stories or suggestions of your own.
