Benefiting From Pennsylvania’s Senior Care

SeniorsLogoMr. Scott would like to remain in his home as he ages, but he needs help with daily tasks. He lives on Social Security and is concerned about costs. We briefly review his needs and financial situation and determine that he is a prime candidate for the Pennsylvania Department of Aging’s Waiver Program.

This plan would provide services such as assistance with personal care, meal preparation, and household chores at no cost to Mr. Smith. These services are fully funded by the PA Lottery.

In order to qualify, an individual must meet the following criteria:

  • Reside in Pennsylvania
  • Be at least 60 years of age
  • Meet clinical and financial eligibility for Medical Assistance services
  • Agree to the requirements and responsibilities of the program

Seniors Helping Seniors agrees to submit a referral on behalf of Mr. Smith in order to initiate the process of procuring services. We explain that because Mr. Smith resides in Chester County, a representative from the Chester County Department of Aging Services will contact him to further evaluate his needs and formulate a plan.

Similar to the Waiver Program, the Pennsylvania Department of Aging also offers the Options Program. This plan provides consumers with home-based services. However, financial income and assets are reviewed in order to determine cost sharing. The requirements of this program include:

  • Reside in Pennsylvania
  • Be at least 60 years of age
  • Verify income and asset information and agree to share costs

Seniors Helping Seniors welcomes the opportunity to submit referrals for its clients. More information on the Options Program is available by contacting Seniors Helping Seniors or:

For Veterans or their spouses with homemaker or personal care needs, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs can provide support through its Homemaker and Home Health Aide Program. A representative from your local VA medical center can help arrange for an aide to come to your home on a regular schedule to assist with your needs.
