Judith Lee: Debunking Blogging Myths

by Judith Lee

Once again, questions at one of my recent SCORE presentations (shoutout to Great Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce) raised some interesting concerns, this time about blogging. I’d like to debunk these common myths:

1. “Blogging is for writers.” Blogging is such a simplified form of writing, you don’t need to be any kind of writer at all. Blogs are very short (3-5 paragraphs) commentaries or essays that make a few points. Anyone who has something to say can write a blog.

2. “Blogs are opinion pieces.” They can be opinion pieces, but they can also be purely informative. Blogs are for communication of any sort. This is a blog.

3. “Blogs are time-consuming.” You can control the time you spend on a blog by keeping them short and simple. I spend 20 minutes a week on my blog.

4. “It’s hard to come up with topics for a blog.” Nonsense! Think about 10 questions your customers ask you, then answer them in three paragraphs. Voila! You have 10 blogs.

5. “There’s no reason for me to blog.” Every business has several good reasons to blog: To educate/inform customers, to connect with customers and prospects, to demonstrate expertise.

Now get to it!
