Politicians Join Medical Device Professionals In Rallying Against Medical Device Tax
Pennsylvania Bio gathered more than 150 medical device professionals at The Porch at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia Feb. 10 to tell federal elected officials to repeal the 2.3 percent Medical Device Tax within the Affordable Care Act.
“Medical innovation is the cornerstone of Pennsylvania’s economy and this excise tax has proven to be a jobs-killing and research-stifling mistake,” said Christopher P. Molineaux, president and CEO of the statewide trade association representing the life sciences industry. “We are on the path to repeal the Medical Device Tax and we are grateful to the members of the Pennsylvania delegation who have demonstrated steadfast leadership and support to the industry.”
Joining Molineaux in the protest were Caroll Neubauer, chairman and CEO of B.Braun Medical Inc.; and members of the Pennsylvania congressional delegation including Congressman Ryan Costello, Congressman Charlie Dent, and Congressman Pat Meehan.
There are more than 1,900 medical device companies in Pennsylvania, employing 31,000 Pennsylvania workers. Pennsylvania Bio says the additional tax on manufacturers curtails the ability for firms to grow and hire, and squeezes research and development budgets.
