Local Expert Richard Gillespie Speaks To CNN About AirAsia Flight

Richard Gillespie, Executive Director of TIGHAR

Some Chester County residents who tuned into CNN during the past week to watch coverage about the crash of AirAsia Flight 8501 into the Java Sea may have been surprised to see a local expert weighing in on the recovery efforts.

CNN interviewed Richard Gillespie of Oxford, executive director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery. TIGHAR (pronounced “tiger”) is a non-profit foundation dedicated to promoting responsible aviation archaeology and historic preservation.

TIGHAR says it compiles and verifies reports of rare and historic aircraft surviving in remote areas; conducts investigations and recovery expeditions in co-operation with museums and collections; and serves as a voice for integrity, responsibility and professionalism in the field of aviation historic preservation.

Read more about the organization right here. One of TIGHAR’s major projects is investigating the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, and Gillespie believes TIGHAR has identified a piece of aluminum found on Nikumaroro as having come from Amelia Earhart’s lost aircraft.

On a not entirely unrelated note Smithsonian.com this month has a piece quoting Gillespie titled “Will the search for Amelia Earhart ever end?” .
