By

8.27.2014 Longwood Autumn PumpkinA garden railway, pumpkin playground and chrysanthemum festival will be among the highlights as Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square celebrates the beauty of autumn Sept. 6 through Nov. 23.

The gardens are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For tickets, visit Longwood Garden’s website here.

A focal point this season is the new 86-acre Meadow Garden which is in its most colorful season with late-blooming goldenrod, native aster, and warm-season meadow grasses in the landscape.  Meadow Days Sept. 20 and Oct. 11 will offer some fun events for visitors. Longwood experts will be on hand to answer questions as guests explore more than three miles of walking trails, and kids will have the chance to enjoy a nature seek-and-find.

The railway near the Birdhouse Treehouse is an enchanting display of G-scale model trains traversing bridges, tunnels and water. Children of all ages are invited to the interactive Pumpkin Playground beginning Oct. 1. The largest pumpkin in the display tops 800 pounds.

There will be 80,000 colorful chrysanthemums blooming during the Chrysanthemum Festival.  Gardeners are transforming many of the flowers into spirals, cascades, balls and a 10-foot yellow chandelier. The centerpiece of the display is the Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum, a single chrysanthemum plant grown to produce more than 1,000 perfect blooms.

After hours the second annual Night of 1,000 Lights will take place both Nov. 7 and 8. The conservatory will glow with 1,000 Asian-inspired lanterns, and guests will be invited to make their own lanterns for the festival parade.

Performances this fall include: Australia’s Strange Fruit Sept. 5-7; and Ladies & Gentlemen… The Beatles.
