Three Chester County farms have just gone into preservation through the Pennsylvania Agricultural Land Preservation Board.

They are Glenville Farms, a 77.06-acre Cochranville crop and livestock operation owned by the Norman Laffey family; MFP Partners LP, a 121-acre crop farm in Franklin Township; and the 52-acre crop and livestock farm of Benuel and Emma Stoltzfus in West Nottingham Township.

The local farms were among 26 farms totaling 2,636 acres that went into preservation. Agriculture Secretary George Greig said the commonwealth is on track to safeguard its half-millionth acre of farmland from development by the end of 2014.

“But just as important are each acre we preserved today and all others safeguarded since the program began in 1988,” said Greig. “Each one brings us closer to preserving our state’s best farmland for production agriculture for generations to come.”

Since the program began in 1988, federal, state, county and local governments have invested more than $1.2 billion to preserve 493,786 acres on 4,638 farms in 57 counties for future agricultural production.

Information and assistance from the Chester County Agricultural Land Preservation Board is here.  The state board helps county, state and local governments purchase conservation easements or development rights.  In some cases, the federal Farm and Ranchlands Protection Program provides additional assistance. Last fiscal year, Pennsylvania received $4.2 million in federal reimbursements.
