YMCA Boards Approves Merger Plan

The YMCA of the Brandywine Valley and YMCA of the Upper Main Line are uniting to form a new regional Association.

There’s a lot going on at all YMCA branches this summer, and it’s official – starting Sept. 1 members will be able to take advantage of even more activities.

Denise Day, president and CEO of the YMCA, said on June 17, the boards of directors of the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley and the YMCA of the Upper Main Line formally approved a plan of merger.

On Jan. 1 the combined association will be named the YMCA of Greater Brandywine.   A transition team of employees from both organizations is working to integrate operations.

“I am confident that, by combining the staff, volunteers, facilities and financial resources from both associations, we will provide our members with the highest-quality Y experience and impact even more children and families throughout Chester County,” Day said.

Day said members can expect even more benefits as a result of the merger, and beginning this September, YMCA of the Brandywine Valley members will have full, unlimited access to all facilities and programs at the YMCA of the Upper Main Line.

The YMCA is one of the county’s largest employers and social organizations.  According to the Y’s 2013 annual report the YMCA had 47,861 members and employed 1,497 staff at the end of 2013.  The organization served 2,557 children in babysitting, preschool and child care programs.  Also, the Y gave $3 million in financial assistance to 18,000 people enrolled in YMCA programs.
