Willowdale Steeplechase Is May 11

By

The 22nd annual running of the Willowdale Steeplechase is Sunday, May 11, a perfect opportunity to host a Mother’s Day tailgate picnic and watch a first-class race in a community that nurtures top jockeys, trainers and horses.

Typically the event attracts about 10,000 spectators. General admission is $25 in advance, $30 at the gate, and children 10 and under may attend free. Tailgate reserved spaces include four tickets and range in cost from $175 to $450. Call 610-444-1582 for parking and tailgate information.

The gates open at 10 a.m. The Jack Russell terrier races are at 11 a.m., pony races are at 12:15 p.m., and the first race is at 1:30 p.m. The 190-acre grounds are at 101 East Street Road, Kennett Square.

As the Willowdale Steeplechase is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization founded by W.B. Dixon Stroud Jr., proceeds from the event benefit the Stroud Water Research Center, The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine New Bolton Center and Quest Therapeutic Services, Inc.

The amphitheater-like site is carved out of a former 160-acre dairy farm, with spectacular views. Willowdale is styled after a combination of both European and American race courses, with a turf course, water jump, hedges and post and rail jumps. The course features an uphill approach to the fences, which encourages less speed and more jumping. This causes less wear and tear on the horses.

The water jump is the only one of its kind in North America. Because it has a 12-foot span with an 18-inch drop in elevation, jockeys have to ride “California Surfing” style — which refers to the method of sitting on the horse, not plowing through the water.

Since the steeplechase was founded in 1993, the nonprofit event has donated over $300,000 to local charities. The organization is always looking for sponsorships and volunteers.
