Two Local Agencies Offer More Options For Commuters

Those who must commute to work but are interested in reducing their carbon footprint have two additional transportation options beyond the car.

The Transportation Management Association of Chester County recently increased service along the Coatesville Link and Southern Chester County SCCOOT. There is now more midday service on the Link, as well as additional stops along the SCCOOT. Last fall TMACC had cut service on the Link and SCCOOT due to lack of transportation funds. Funds were restored in the most recent state transportation bill.

“Last year, the lines reported combined usage of just under 100,000 riders,” said P. Timothy Phelps, TMACC executive director. “Last fall we were forced to contract our bus services on both lines due to state funding perils, we are happy to announce the restoration of many of those cuts, as well as the addition of several important stops on both lines.”

The Link operates between Parkesburg and the Brandywine YMCA, while the SCCOOT runs from Oxford to Kennett Square with trips to West Chester. Both offer a low cost, ecological method of transportation to and from employment, medical appointments, entertainment, and commercial businesses.

Updated schedules are available to riders on each bus and will be widely distributed throughout the service area. They can also be accessed online at www.tmacc.org and http://www.chescorideguide.org/ChescoRideGuide.pdf.

Secondly, RideECO is a benefit offered by some regional employees to help commuters pay for the cost of getting to work on public transportation. RideECO is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and promotes easy commute options to save time and money and cut emissions.

With RideECO, you decide how much money you want to set aside – pre-tax – for public transportation each month. Commuters then buy RideECO vouchers, transit passes or load a Stored-Value Card with pre-tax dollars. You are then taxed on a lower salary. The DVRPC reports some commuters save more than $500 annually this way.
