Victory Brews New India Pale Ale

Victory Brewing Company is now making 1337 Ale – a special release American India Pale Ale – available along the East Coast in honor of the company’s 18th anniversary.

1337 Ale is a recipe Victory co-founders Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet used during their early days as home brewers. The brew, with the pleasant aroma of mild caramel malts and earthy hops, salutes the federal legislation that legalized home brewing.

In 1978 H.R. 1337 made home brewed beer for personal or family use exempt from taxation, giving way to the birth of the now thriving craft beer industry.

Company history says in 1978 the CEOs were childhood friends more focused on street hockey and Star Wars than beer. Six years later they began to make beer with a home brew kit, and developed the hobby that led them to abandon their corporate jobs and eventually launch Victory Brewing Company

Victory, headquartered in Downingtown, recently opened its second state-of-the-art 140,000-square-foot brewery just outside of Parkesburg (above) in West Sadsbury. The facility at 3127 Lower Valley Road is set on 42 acres of countryside, and will be open to tours beginning in April.

1337 Ale will be available for a limited time, on draft and packed in 22-ounce bottles and kegs. Bottles retail for $4.99 at most locations. The Victory’s Beerfinder lists locations, and the company also has a free downloadable Victory Mobile app for Android or iPhone use.

“Thankfully, 1337 Ale has more maturity and complexity than Ron and I did as 16-year olds,” Covaleski, president and brewmaster, said in a news release. “The throwback recipe took us on a nice walk down Memory Lane, while at the same time, we are so excited to celebrate the next phase of our journey and hope our fans have enjoyed the ride as much as we have.”

The privately held craft opened in 1996. Victory, which also operates a restaurant at the Downingtown location, now serves fans of fully flavored beers in 34 states. Its innovative beers meld European ingredients and technology with American creativity.
