A Sweet Year For Tastykake’s Parent, Flowers Foods

By

Flowers Foods – which employs more than 200 people at the Tasty Baking Co. plant in Oxford in Chester County’s southern tier – is reporting strong sales for 2013.

The Thomasville, Ga.-b3.19.2014 Tastykake Logoased baking company reports overall sales jumped 23.1 percent to $3.751 billion in 2013, good news for the local employees who produce mini donuts and honey buns at the 700 Lincoln St. bakery in southwest Chester County.

The local goodies which are transported to coffee breaks throughout the nation via iconic big blue Tastykake trucks are just a few among many products baked by Flowers. The company also markets Wonder Bread, Barowsky’s Organics and Butterkrust, Holsum and Sunbeam breads.

“2013 was a year in which Flowers Foods marked several milestones, both financial and strategic,” Allen L. Shiver, Flowers president and chief executive officer, said in a news release. “We achieved 23.1 percent sales growth in the year and delivered earnings growth of 31.9 percent, in line with our guidance.”

Tastykake retail sales reached $425 million during 2013, indicating Tastykake was a wise buy for Flowers Foods. Flowers Foods purchased Tasty Baking Company’s facilities in Philadelphia and Oxford in 2011 for $141 million.

Flowers has continued to snap up other struggling brands. The firm acquired the Sara Lee brand, and Hostess assets and brands during 2013. The company aims to distribute its many baked goods to 75 percent of U.S. stores by 2016.
