Dr. Christopher M. Fiorentino, currently the Vice President for External Operations at West Chester University has been appointed WCU’s interim President by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. He will take up his new responsibilities from April 1st, following the retirement of the university’s current President, Dr. Greg R. Weisenstein, who has been successfully leading the institution for over 6 years.

Fiorentino, who holds three degrees in economics, has been in his current position since 2013. He was selected for the interim post in consultation with West Chester University’s Council of Trustees Chair, Thomas A. Fillippo.

“Dr. Fiorentino has been at West Chester for more than 20 years, as a faculty member, a Dean and a Vice President. He has a firm understanding of the university and its mission,” commented Board of Governors Chairman, Guido M. Pichini. “We are confident he will continue to provide strong leadership to the institution while we search for a new, permanent president.”

Fiorentino started his long and fruitful career at WCU when he joined the economics faculty in 1983, progressing to the position of Dean of the College of Business and Public Affairs by 1993.

His leadership ability has been previously demonstrated in various ways such as helping the School of Business secure AACSB International accreditation, developing off-campus academic centers including the Graduate Center in West Goshen Township and the Philadelphia Center.

He also worked with the faculty and its supporters to create the Cottrell Entrepreneurial Leadership Center.

In his time with WCU, Fiorentino has also acted as the university’s representative in various roles throughout the region. These include his work as a member of the West Chester Business Improvement District Board, leading a task force which recommended improvements to budgeting and financial management processes of Chester County, and by launching the Center for Community Solutions.

“Strong university leadership is especially important during a period of transition,” remarked State System Chancellor, Frank T. Brogan. Dr. Fiorentino has demonstrated his leadership abilities throughout his career. His familiarity with the institution and the vital role it plays in the region and the Commonwealth—and within the State System—will be invaluable as he assumes the responsibilities of interim president.”

The university will begin a search for a permanent president later this year.
