ACME Markets Sees A&P Bankruptcy As Opportunity For Big Expansion
ACME Markets has found a sale it can’t resist. The 124-year-old Malvern-headquartered grocery brand has a bid on the 76 bankrupt A&P, Superfresh and Pathmark stores.
If a deal is struck, the purchase would make ACME 71 percent larger and grow its presence into two new states: Connecticut and New York. ACME already serves customers in Pennsylvania, New Jeresey, Delaware and Maryland.
The offer may have to compete with other bids between now and Sept. 11, and it would need court approval by Oct. 15 as well as anti-trust consideration.
Already enjoying the success brought on by its merger with Albertsons in 2013, the streamlined ACME Markets could see this transaction expand its footprint in a strategic and vibrant market and build upon A&P’s rich history of delivering quality products and services in the neighborhoods it serves.
A&P filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 19.
